From forensic chemistry student to sustainability warrior

Zac Fratkin is a proven, passionate, and relentless business leader with extensive experience in leadership, management, and accountability.

In 2010, finishing the final semester of an undergraduate Chemistry degree, he attempted to find work as a Forensic Trace Analyst, but had no such luck in a down economy. Downtrodden and student loan debt weighing heavily on his mind, an introduction from a friend found Fratkin in front of the CEO of Used Cardboard Boxes, Inc. Based in Los Angeles and opening their first warehousing operation in Baltimore to buy and sell used boxes, they were scrambling to get their facility under control.

Used Cardboard Boxes, Inc’s business model was simple: pay companies more than recycling rates for unpacked boxes, charge consumers and businesses less than the cost of new boxes, reduce demand for cutting down trees to make new boxes, create jobs right here in the US, perform the work efficiently and make a profit.

Inexperienced in manufacturing and sustainability, but hungry and eager to prove himself, Fratkin joined as an entry level Production Associate, sorting and stacking thousands of boxes per day by hand. Fratkin’s entrepreneurial spirit, passion, attention to detail, team mindedness and get it done mentality were quickly recognized and leveraged by leadership with 8 promotions, culminating in C-level roles, and paving the way for 7 figure annual growth for 11 straight years in a row for the company.

Today, Fratkin holds Officer roles as Chief Officer of Revenue (CRO) and Information (CIO), driving global profitability through innovation of our employee professional development programs, company structures, technology, and information systems. Fratkin started as their 5th employee, to recruiting and developing a network of 7 international offices and warehouses, making up a workforce of over 100 employees and contractors.

Fratkin is on the leading edge of technology, developing the company’s home grown software which is utilized for internal processes such as CRM, sales quoting (CPQ), order fulfillment, commerce, analytics and reporting...as well as externally used by leading Fortune 1000 manufacturing companies to track their sustainability metrics in real time, as well as to make the entire used box marketplace nothing more than a point and click away to their customers.

As of 2022, Fratkin’s shining achievement is having saved an equivalent of over 6,000,000 trees through box re-use and diverted 500,000,000,000 pounds out of landfills through proper waste tracking, management and consulting. This includes managing the North American solid waste sustainability program for the Most Sustainable Food Manufacturing Company in the world (as rated by Corporate Knights in 2020).

Fratkin’s continued mission is to expand his diversity of skills, experience, scope of work, influence and gain a worldly perspective of business and people management.

Trust

Everything starts and ends with trust, it is the foundation on which all things stand. With trust, the world is a place of infinite possibilities. Without trust, nothing is possible.

Accountability

Do what you are supposed to be doing, when you are supposed to be doing it, or communicate otherwise. Keeping your commitments and updating expectations as they may change allows for everyone involved to continue down the same path together in a changing world.

People First

All decisions are made with a people first mentality. Life is about relationships with other fellow human beings riding on this rock around the sun together in harmony. All decisions made affect one another in some capacity, so considering how all decisions affect people should be the compass which guides all decision making.

Innovation

The only constant in life is change, be a part of shaping that change for the better. Ms. Frizzle said it best, “Take Chances, Make Mistakes, Get Messy!”
